What You Can Expect

Arakoon Kids Supported Playgroup is a warm, inclusive and low-barrier early learning space for families with children aged birth to five. Run alongside South West Rocks Preschool, it reflects the same values of connection, equity and community care.

Families are welcomed by degree-qualified Early Childhood Teachers and volunteers who create a calm, child-centred space where the focus is on relationships, play and building confidence.

A Safe Welcoming Space

Calm indoor play environment prepared for children attending Arakoon Kids Playgroup.

Families have the opportunity to meet one another, build connections and form genuine friendships through the relaxed, welcoming nature of the playgroup. As children play, adults naturally come together—sharing stories, celebrating milestones, exchanging ideas and offering support. These small moments of connection help families feel part of a community, reducing isolation and strengthening their sense of belonging.

The playgroup environment encourages families to learn from each other, offer encouragement and build informal networks of support. Whether it is a friendly conversation, a shared experience, or simply knowing others are on a similar journey, these relationships create a strong foundation of trust and community care. Over time, families develop meaningful bonds that extend beyond the playgroup, enriching both their children’s wellbeing and their own.

Practical Support

Healthy fruit, snacks and food provided for families attending playgroup.

We remove financial pressure by offering the playgroup completely free of charge and by providing food and snacks, nappies, essential consumables, and access to toys, books and learning materials. Families do not need to pack anything – they can simply come along and enjoy the session without any added costs or preparation.

Learning Through Play

Children exploring water play together during an outdoor playgroup session.

Children engage in open‑ended, developmentally rich play experiences that nurture communication, social skills, early literacy and emotional wellbeing. Through play, children explore ideas, practise problem‑solving, build friendships and develop confidence in their own abilities.

Educators gently guide and support parents and carers as well, offering encouragement, modelling positive interactions and sharing simple strategies that strengthen learning and connection at home. The environment is intentionally calm and welcoming, allowing adults to feel just as supported as their children.

Support When You Need It

Regular visits from community health and allied health professionals give families the opportunity to:

  • Ask questions in a relaxed environment

  • Receive early identification of developmental needs

  • Access warm referrals to services

  • Build trust with local support networks

  • Connect with preschool educators

This is especially valuable for families who may not otherwise engage with formal services.

A Gentle Step Into Preschool

Arakoon Kids acts as a supported pathway into early childhood education. Families build familiarity with our educators, routines and environment — making the transition into preschool enrolment smooth and positive for both children and parents.
